The Easy Way to Beat the Muggy Heat of a Wet British Summer

It is fair to say that British summers are rarely predictable. To be sure, there is just no way of knowing if any particular time between May and September will be basking in glorious sunshine or getting battered by torrential rain.

One thing that we do know though is that the episodes of rain and sun do not typically last for very long. Indeed, when the sun does arrive it is soon kicked out by the rain; and, when the rain shows up, it is inevitably moved on by the sun.

In truth, it is truly bizarre way to experience a summer.

As well as making British-based holiday options difficult to finalise, this ever-repeating cycle of sunshine-rain-sunshine-rain can also leave an uncomfortable level of humidity in the air. This in turn creates a hot, sticky atmosphere which is difficult to relax in during the day and hard to sleep through at night.

Some people struggle to deal with this. Indeed, most people who get hot and bothered simply fling open their windows in the hope that a bit of fresh air will help them to cool down. However, this normally just makes the problem worse as, instead of getting plenty of cool refreshing air, they simply get a load of noise pollution and bugs.

Other people see domestic air-conditioning units as being the answer. However, this option too has its drawbacks. To get the full effect of an air-conditioner, residents need to keep all the windows in their house closed. This is less than ideal as the summertime is really the only time that anyone in Britain gets the chance to open their windows! In addition, air-conditioners also use a lot of electricity and the larger ones can be really quite noisy.

So, if opening windows and installing air-conditioning units isn't the answer; what is?

Ceiling fans.

Indeed, the installation of a ceiling fan can provide residents with several benefits which the aforementioned cooling strategies are unable to offer. Firstly, a ceiling fan is able to keep a room cool simply by rotating at relatively low speeds as the air it blows down causes anyone underneath to experience an evaporating sensation on their skin which feels immediately refreshing.

Secondly, operating at low speeds means that ceiling-mounted fans are quiet and undisruptive. Indeed, the blades are able to turn quick enough to provide freshly circulated air, yet rotate slow enough slow enough so as not to make a noise or blow loose papers around.

Thirdly, ceiling-mounted fans (even ceiling fans with lights) use far less electricity than air-conditioning units. This means that residents with ceiling-mounted fans can not only benefit from significant utility bill savings; they can also take solace in the fact that they are helping to keep their household's carbon footprint to a minimum.
